March 22, 2009 We are closing down for the summer and will reopen around August 1 in Mt. Home. This decision was made reluctantly, but is required this year. Both Clay and I hope to be working extensively this summer. I hope to be out west working on fires and Clay has started a new business and will need to dedicate time to insure its success. In addition, we have lost most of our junior students to other activities and some of those left will be playing baseball during the months we are closed. Due to the small popoulation base in Calico Rock we were never able to gain enough students fo get the dojo to pay its own way, so the decision has been made to move to Mt. Home hoping that we can gain enough students there to stay in business. I will keep the website open and will post updates thrughout the summer. There are activities in Little Rock and other locations that we will participate in throughout the summer as the opportunities present themselves. Keep checking back for updates on our move to Mt. Home.
January 26, 2009 Monthly practice tournaments will be held in Little Rock beginning Febuary 7, 2009 at the Arkansas Goshinkan Dojo. Directions and more information will be added to the tournaments page when I get them.
January 13, 2009: I have been given formal notice that the owner of the building where our dojo is located has sold the building. We can continue to have judo practice there until at least April 1, 2009 and maybe some time longer, but it seems certain that we will have to look for another place to practice. Please look for a new location for our dojo. Since it is apparent that we will have to move, I would like to look at Mt. Home as a potential location since I think we would have better luck recruiting students. However, we will need to be sure that the current students can attend classes there so we may have to develop a ride share program. In addition, the cost are likely to go up with a move to any new location so we will have to deal with that as well. While I have been able to supplement the fees from my personal funds to pay all the bills, this will be unlikely if we have to move into a place any more expensive than what we pay now. I also understood that we will have to start paying the natural gas bill as well, this is something that the current owner paid for us because he thought our program was worthwhile. It is likely that the new owner will expect us to pay that as well. I do not know how much this is likely to add at this time, but any additional expense will be difficult for me to absorb until I start fighting fires again this summer.
