Cirriculum:
We teach traditional Kodokan Judo of Japanses Orgin. Our cirriculum includes Tachi-Waza (throwing techniques), Ne-Waza (grappling techniques) and Atemi-Waza (pressure point techniques). We teach Kodokan Judo using randori (free fighting), kata (pre-arranged forms), and shiai (competition). All of our students are expected to participate in each of these categories as they progress through the ranks. Our cirriculum has been developed to ensure that a student has a basic understanding of the principles of Kodokan Judo when they reach the rank of Shodan (First Degree Black Belt). This will include the ability to demonstrate all 40 basic throwing techniques to the right and left side, the ability to execute all the basic pins, chokes and joint locks. In addition the Shodan candidate will be able to perform the complete Nage-No-Kata as both the defender and the aggressor (tori and uke). The candidate will also be able to demonstrate effective self defense techniques against unarmed and armed attackers. Our cirriculum requres a student starting at 17 or older to study Kodokan Judo for at least seven and a half (7.5) years and practice for a minimum of 1,392 hours before being eligible to test for Shodan (First Degree Black Belt). Philosphy:
Kodokan Judo is recognized in the United States as a popular Olympic Sport and an effective system of self defense. We believe, however, that it is much more than a combat sport. Studying Kodokan Judo will instill pride in the individual, create a strong body, develop a strong character, improve discipline and provide for a confident person. It is an activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family for a lifetime. It is not uncommon to see judo practitioners in their 70's and even an ocassional judoka (as they are known inside Kodokan Judo) on the mat teaching and working out into their 90's. Because of this, we teach Kodokan Judo for sport, physical fitness, discipline and self defense. We believe on the three maxims of Kodokan Judo as developed by Dr. Jigoro Kano the founder. These are:
- Maximum benefit with minimum effort. This maxim teaches one to apply themselves so that they can gain the most advantage with the least effort. This translates into a philosophy that teaches students to do their homework or chores correct the first time so that they do not have to do them over.
- Mutual welfare and benefit. This maxim teaches us to take care of each other. Without a partner it is impossible to learn Kodokan Judo, so if you hurt your training partner you can not continue to learn. In life this translates into caring for your neighbors, especially those not able to care for themselves.
- Perfection of the individual. This maxim teaches us to become the very best we can at whatever we decide to do. It is not enough just to be average, judo practitioners want to excel at whatever they do. He/she should be in the best physical condition possible, should be storng of character, and should be disciplined enough to set goals and achieve them.
